I absolutely agree with you about the need to sell the value of learning and “spikes” which may not necessarily contribute to a tangible business benefit. I also think that these kind of improvement opportunities needn’t stop at the purely technical either. Ensuring that people have the latitude to go off and learn “softer” skills like presenting or technical documentation are both good examples of other ways that companies and teams can enable their peeps.
